'Green' energy production makes advances
NEW YORK (UPI) -- The United States and Europe added more power
capacity from renewable sources like wind and solar than from
conventional sources in 2009, a report says.
This year or next, experts predict, the world as a whole will add more
capacity to the electricity supply from renewable sources than from
traditional sources such as coal, gas or nuclear plants, a report by
the U.N. Environment Program said Thursday.
China surpassed the United States in 2009 as the country with the
greatest investment in clean energy, the report said, with China's
wind farm development enjoying the greatest investments.
Countries that encourage renewable energy have roughly doubled, the
report noted, from 55 in 2005 to more than 100 today, half of them in
the developing world.
In 2009 renewable sources represented 25 percent of global electrical power

Subject: Horizon Holdings releases 2009 Sustainability Report
To: siegholle@gmail.com
I am very pleased to announce that Horizon Holdings Inc., the parent company of
Horizon Utilities Corporation and Horizon Energy Solutions Inc., has just
published its second Sustainability-Based Annual Report. This year, Horizon
expanded its Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting scope to include
external assurance. Horizon Utilities is now not only the first electric
utility company in Ontario to report under the GRI framework, but also the
first to receive external assurance for its 2009 GRI filing.
Committed to the Sustainable Development of the Communities we Serve
At Horizon, we are committed to building energy companies that will contribute
to the sustainability of communities, and the creation of a culture of energy
conservation in Ontario. We believe that embedding sustainable practices into
our normal business routines will not only benefit our customers, the
communities we serve, and the environment, but will also improve our economic
performance and long-term prospects for success.
We are the first Electric Utility in Ontario to Receive External Assurance of
our GRI Filing
In 2009, Horizon expanded its GRI reporting scope to include independent
assurance performed by Ernst & Young. Ernst & Young performed a limited
assurance engagement of 10 GRI indicators reported by Horizon in its 2009 GRI
filing. Following the GRI criteria and its report application levels, Horizon
has the external assurance in hand to make the 2009 GRI report filing at the
"B+" application level.
Our Sustainability Report, GRI Filing and Assurance Report can be found online
at [1]www.horizonutilities.com/sustainability.
By benchmarking ourselves against an international standard for sustainability,
our aim is to continuously improve our business practices and bring added value
to all of Horizon's stakeholders. Growing our business sustainably, improving
performance, and responding successfully to the new business opportunities
presented by Ontario's Green Energy and Economy Act are the goals we have set
to be a leader in the energy sector.
We hope you enjoy reading our new report and would welcome your feedback at:

solar plane
Solar-power plane stays aloft for 26 hours
BERN, Switzerland (UPI) -- A solar-powered plane completed its test flight, staying aloft for 26 hours and 9 minutes before landing near in Bern, Switzerland, its pilot said Thursday.
The record-setting feat caps seven years of planning, bringing the Swiss-led project a step closer to its goal of circling the globe using only solar energy, The Daily Mail of London reported.
"We achieved more than we wanted. Everybody is extremely happy," pilot Andre Borschberg said after landing the Solar Impulse at the airfield where he departed the day before. "The night is quite long, so to see the first rays of dawn and the sun returning in the morning -- that was a gift."
The single-seat plane is covered with panels containing 12,000 solar cells designed to collect energy from the sun's rays and power four electric motors driving wing-mounted propellers, the British publication said. During the night, the plane was powered by batteries charged during the day.
Borschberg said he and his team hope to circle the globe non-stop in 2012 in a plane with a wingspan of 262 1/2 feet compared with the 207-foot wingspan of the Solar Impulse.
While the goal is to demonstrate that emission-free air travel is possible, the team said it doesn't foresee solar technology replacing conventional jet propulsion any time soon. Rather, they said, the project can help test and promote new energy-efficient technologies.

solar car fuel
Solar power could create fuel for cars
ALBUQUERQUE (UPI) -- Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere could soon be used to create fuel to drive the word's cars and trucks, a U.S. researcher says.
Solar-powered technology could be used to "photosynthesize" hydrocarbon fuels that present-day vehicles could run on without major modifications, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.
Solar reactors can take carbon dioxide and turn it into carbon monoxide and can also turn water into hydrogen and oxygen.
The results can react with a catalyst to form hydrocarbon fuels, in a technique known as the Fischer-Tropsch process.
Tests have been conducted with solar reactors in New Mexico and Zurich, Switzerland.
Using solar energy to create usable fuel is a possible way to satisfy the world's energy demands while minimizing carbon emissions, Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution told Britain's New Scientist magazine.
"This area holds out the promise for technologies that can produce large amounts of carbon-neutral power at affordable prices, which can be used where and when that power is needed," he said.

Solar energy rate change zaps farmers - Brantford Expositor - Ontario, CA
Brant-area farmers are crying foul over a drastic cut by Premier Dalton McGuinty's government in a subsidy for farmers who are signing up with companies to generate power with ground-mounted solar units.
The government is facing an angry reaction to an announcement that the Ontario Power Authority will slash to 58 cents per kilowatt hour from 80.2 cents for payment for solar-generated power in its microFIT program that is meant to enhance green electricity production and allow smaller suppliers to plug into the grid.
fctAdTag("bigbox",MyGenericTagVar,1);
"As a farmer, speaking personally, I am very, very concerned at the sudden change, " Sandra Vos, president of the Brant County Federation of Agriculture, said Friday.
"Solar power production would have helped farmers a lot. What is going to happen to all the businesses that invested because of the price that was quoted earlier?
Vos said a change of that magnitude in the rate will affect the popularity of the program, because, at 58 cents, suppliers will make money only in the last four years of a 20-year contract.
"Here was a chance to provide a good solid Ontario manufacturing opportunity for companies producing those units and distributors who would put them together. Now it's gone."
The OPA says the price had to be cut because the program had "vastly surpassed expectations" with 16,000 applicants. If it had gone unchecked, it explained, the government would have been faced with an extra $1 billion over 20 years.

You have received this e-mail because our records indicate that you signed up for a free subscription to the Daily Dose eLetter. The secret is out -- The HIGHER your cholesterol...the BETTER! Imagine cutting your stroke risk by 300%...reviving your sex drive...improving your brain function...and even lowering your likelihood of cancer -- all by doing something that would cause most doctors to give you a good wrist slap. But when you tune out the mainstream's anti-cholesterol propaganda -- life is good. You can eat much more of the food you love AND feel better doing it.Don't believe me? Take a look at the amazing studies that Big Pharma is trying to bury. And this is just the first of many mainstream myths... http://clicks.douglassreport.com//t/AQ/AAHrQQ/AAHyrA/AAILXQ/AQ/AmRRXw/UMOo Filling your home with mercury If you've fallen for the compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulb scam, you're the one getting screwed -- in more ways than one. Not only are these things expensive and dim, they're also dangerous. A reader named Ken wrote in to say that these bulbs did a number on him. "I think the new CFL light bulbs are death," he wrote. "I am extremely angry at them for allowing them to be sold without a warning on the box!!" Allowing? Heck, Ken -- they're MANDATING it. CFLs are the law of land, passed by those dim bulbs in Congress. Starting in 2012, America's beacon of freedom is going to be a mercury-laden death ray -- and that light will be shining on YOU. There's emerging evidence that these bulbs can cause seizures and dizziness, worsen migraine headaches and send lupus patients doubling over in agony. They've been linked to skin disorders and even cancer. I can only wonder what else they'll discover when hundreds of millions of people are forced to sit under these bulbs all day, every day... at home, at work, and everywhere in between. Even worse, CFL bulbs are filled with mercury. They'll tell you it's a "tiny" amount, but a single bulb contains enough mercury to contaminate 6,000 gallons of water. Does that sound safe to you? Let me shine a little light in this one: Small amounts of mercury can lay waste to your central nervous system, and all it takes is a whiff, taste or touch. Mercury can damage your vision, ruin your speech, wreck your hearing, turn you into a herky-jerky spastic, and give you the rash of a lifetime. Ever hear the phrase "mad as a hatter?" It's because hatters worked with mercury -- and it literally drove them nuts. And when the greenies get their way, we'll all be mad hatters. After all, light bulbs break -- and it's just a matter of time before you and your family are exposed to mercury from a shattered CFL bulb. All that, and I haven't even touched on what's going to happen when all the mercury from discarded and "recycled" bulbs seeps into the ground and ends up in the already-filthy water supply. I'm no fan of ordinary incandescent lights, either -- I'm convinced they're responsible for poor health and cataracts. But in this case it's a lesser of two evils. And if you hope to keep using them, you'd better stock up now. Soon, you won't have a choice. Avoid the stop-and-start and... Pee Like a Firehose! New findings are so cutting-edge, even your doctor may not have been briefed. This amazing alternative could be the answer to a healthy prostate FAST & FOREVER...keep reading: http://clicks.douglassreport.com//t/AQ/AAHrQQ/AAHyrA/AAILXg/AQ/AmRRXw/tOWy Kiddie juice loaded with lead OK, so the supposedly earth-friendly CFL light bulbs are packed with poisonous mercury... and now, get this: Your kids and grandkids are sucking back lead like there's no tomorrow. It ain't just toys and trinkets anymore... a new study finds that some of today's most popular juices, packaged fruits and even baby foods are filled with enough lead to cripple Superman. The Environmental Law Foundation sent 146 fruit and juice products to an EPA-certified lab, which found lead in 85 percent of them. Didn't matter if it was supermarket swampwater or organic hippie juice -- the lead levels were so high that they should have had warning labels under California law. If you're like me, you're more than a little tired of all the warning labels out there... but when it comes to lead, those labels were made the old-fashioned way: They earned them. Lead can stunt the growth of a still-developing nervous system. It can lead to jumpiness, mental disorders and downright stupidity -- and for once, it's not the kid's fault. Lead exposure can also cause permanent brain damage and even death -- but go ahead, have another sip. It says it's organic -- so it must be safe, right? WRONG! High lead levels were found in organic brands such as Earth's Best, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods' 365 Organic Everyday Value. Do yourself a favor and take a look at the full list here. If any of this stuff is in your fridge, toss it now. Toss the rest of it, too. Juice -- even the "pure" stuff -- is little more than a sugar injection anyway, and anyone who slurps that junk all day is bound to have serious health problems sooner or later. Scientists identify 'memory' molecule
LEICESTER, England (UPI) -- Researchers in Britain say they've discovered a molecular key to how the human brain learns, and how it records and saves memories.
Scientists at the University of Leicester have identified the chemical mechanism by which memories are formed, a university release said Monday.
A key protein is involved in the brain's process of creating and retaining memories, Andrew Tobin, a professor of cell biology, said.
"This protein is present in the part of the brain in which memories are stored," Tobin said. "We have found that in order for any memory to be laid down this protein, called the M3-muscarinic receptor, has to be activated."
The finding could have important implications for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, Tobin said.
Since one of the major symptoms of Alzheimer's is memory loss, he said, drugs designed to target the protein identified in the study could lead to treatment options for the disease.
