With the world’s population expected to hit 9.1 billion by 2050, coupled with the growing effects of climate change on our ability to grow crops, a company out of Barcelona has proposed a solution to feeding the future world. Forward Thinking Architecture's triple-decker Smart Floating Farms would feature 2.2 million square feet (2.04 sq km) of fish farm, hydroponic garden, and rooftop solar panels to power a floating barge, which could be anchored to the beds of oceans, lakes or rivers. The company estimates that each of its floating farms could produce about 8 tons (7.3 tonnes) of vegetables and 1.7 tons (1.5 tonnes) of fish per year.

self made men that we can learn from
Andrew Carnegie (/kÉ‘rˈneɪɡi/ kar-nay-gee, but commonly /ˈkÉ‘rnɨɡi/ kar-nÉ™-gee or /kÉ‘rˈnɛɡi/ kar-neg-ee;[1] November 25, 1835 – August 11, 1919) was a Scottish-American industrialist who led the enormous expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century. He built a leadership role as a philanthropist for the United States and the British Empire. During the last 18 years of his life, he gave away to charities, foundations, and universities about $350 million[2] (in 2015, $13.7 billion) – almost 90 percent of his fortune. His 1889 article proclaiming "The Gospel of Wealth" called on the rich to use their wealth to improve society, and it stimulated a wave of philanthropy.
Carnegie argued that surplus wealth is put to best use (i.e. produces the greatest net benefit to society) when it is administered carefully by the wealthy. Carnegie also argues against wasteful use of capital in the form of extravagance, irresponsible spending, or self-indulgence, instead promoting the administration of said capital over the course of one's lifetime toward the cause of reducing the stratification between the rich and poor. As a result, the wealthy should administer their riches responsibly and not in a way that encourages "the slothful, the drunken, the unworthy".

Solar Energy Prices at All-Time Low - Renewable Energy - MOTHER EARTH NEWS
Solar Energy Prices at All-Time Low - Renewable Energy - MOTHER EARTH NEWS
Here’s a roundup of key findings from this year’s Utility-Scale Solar report.
1. The cost of installation has decreased by more than 50 percent since 2009.
2. Efficiency of new solar technology has increased from an average capacity factor of 24.5 percent in projects completed in 2011 to 29.4 percent in projects completed in 2014.
3. The new low average price of 5 cents per kWh has made solar power a competitive option in states outside of the Southwest, where solar power is most widely used. Notably, Southeastern states Arkansas and Alabama are seeing more solar development than ever before.
The quest for personal energy independence is getting better with time.

While utilities have long discouraged energy storage by homeowners and industrial consumers because it threatens their revenue model, Brown says it makes a lot of sense, not just for enabling more renewable power but for lightening the load on old, creaky infrastructure. If products like Powerwall catch on, the necessary restructuring of the electrical grid will create opportunities and demand new expertise well beyond designing and manufacturing batteries. For example, AES Energy Storage in the U.S. now sells electrical storage the way server farms sell data warehousing. Stem, a California startup, helps large energy users such as hotels finance their own battery arrays. “There’s a whole industry developing here that is all brand new,” Brown says. “There’s a whole bunch of spinoff businesses that are going to start popping up.”

The stand for the region of Liguria at the Milan 2015 Expofeatures a project as bizarre-sounding as it is intriguing: an attempt to grow crops underwater, inside air-filled biospheres. It's part of an effort that could prove a low-cost, low-energy solution to grow food in parts of the world where this was not previously possible.

affordable energy storage?
affordable energy storage?
Plans call for the energy storage units to first be used at a Nissan facility in California later this summer, to help offset peak energy demand. Once they become available for purchase in the fourth quarter of this year, it is hoped that corporate and private consumers will also use the batteries with renewable sources such as wind and solar.
According to Nissan, this is the first time that used EV batteries have been commercially utilized for such an application. "A lithium-ion battery from a Nissan Leaf still holds a great deal of value as energy storage, even after it is removed from the vehicle, so Nissan expects to be able to reuse a majority of Leaf battery packs in non-automotive applications," says Brad Smith, director of Nissan's 4R Energy business in the US.

interesting idea for retrofits and new construction?
The glass panels that let light into our homes and offices have been seen as huge windows of opportunity for engineers in recent times. If the amount of light pouring through can be managed throughout the day, it could lessen reliance on energy-sapping air conditioner units, for instance. This has led to a number of examples of smart facades that keep interior spaces from overheating, and some that even harvest energyfor lights and ventilation. But a new tunable window-tinting technology is claimed to do things the smart glass before it cannot, by allowing users control over brightness, color temperature and opacity.

$150,000 DARPA reward
The Robotics Fast Track (RFT) effort aims to provide more streamlined avenues of innovation, funding 6 to 12-month projects with an average cost of just US$150,000. To get things moving, the agency has recruited the non-profit Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF) to help out. The foundation focuses on software development and works to encourage robotics research and development in the small-scale community.
