Ideas worth working on

Microorganisms are multitalented. The same kinds of bacteria used in wastewater treatment plants can also generate small amounts of electricity. But these two abilities have rarely been combined so cleverly.

Energy future

In the United States, renewable energy sources could supply 80 percent of electricity demand in 2050 just by using technologies commercially available today. That is the word from a new report from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Renewable Electricity Futures Study (RE Futures). The report offers a detailed focus on the extent to which U.S. electricity needs can be supplied by renewable energy sources, including biomass, geothermal, hydropower, solar, and wind.

Another interesting use of organic waste that really saves the environment.
Indiana farm moo-ving with clean transport energy
8 April 2013
A farm in Indiana, US has begun fuelling its fleet of 42 tractor-trailers by re-using the cattle dung it collects on-site.

Fair Oaks Farms (FOF) has around 30,000 cows as part of its operation and it has a $12 million (€9.2 million) digester on its property that converts their manure, and that of pigs, into natural gas. The business used to simply convert into CHP for its barns and other structures but now some of it is used to keep the fleet on the roads.

‘As long as we keep milking cows, we never run out of gas," FOF CEO Gary Corbett was quoted as saying. ‘The switch to cow power saves us from using 2 million gallons of diesel fuel a year and the US Department of Energy believes this to be the largest fleet powered by agricultural waste currently in operation in this country.’

The overall bioenergy project began in June 2011when FOF contracted Clean Energy to build two fuelling stations. The project received financial backing from grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Indiana Office of Energy Development.

A study on the project by the Innovation Centre for US also says the FOF system captures 98% of methane emissions produced.

What climate hawks can (and can't) learn from public-health campaigns

The public health community has learned a lot about what motivates people to change behavior -- and what doesn't. Climate hawks, listen up.

Food for thought    on how to change the "climate terror campaigns"  whch create terror and  fear ,huge government fix it monopolies and little else ? Interesting comparison from public health experiences   Worth reading .

Waste plastic to useable fuel l

http://www.flixxy.com/convert-plastic-to-oil.htm

This is an interesting idea

Idea of the Day...Don't stifle creativity by penalizing those who work hard and make honest mistakes, says one-time presidential hopeful Henry Ross Perot. “I want people moving and shaking the earth and they are going to make mistakes.”

Simple works best

meets objectives
  • plastic made with heat and processed oil
  • recycle waste plastic back into oil
  • why pay to bury it when you can use it again ?
It is not waste it is a resource that has not been properly used .Think outside of the box please.

productivity gap cdn

It's going to take investment and risk to close Canada's productivity gap with the United States, says a report released Monday by Deloitte Canada.

Canada's productivity performance lags behind the U.S. in virtually every instance, regardless of company size, sector, business type or location, notes the report titled The Future of Productivity: Clear choices for a competitive Canada. Productivity is cited as the amount of value (as measured in contribution to GDP) produced per hour worked. A Canadian worker generates $13 less per hour than a U.S. worker, $2 less than an Australian worker and $29 less than a Norwegian worker.

Biofuels International conference - 21-22 November 2012 - Antwerp, Belgium

EU prepares to limit production of crop-based biofuels – want to know more?

A leaked draft law suggests fuels from wheat or rapeseed could only make up 5% of transport energy consumption from 2020.

According to the documents the EU is set to limit the use of crop-based biofuels following concerns the technology is not as effective at cutting emissions as previously thought and may conflict with food production.

Draft rules would permit fuels made from plants such as rapeseed and wheat to make up only 5% of total energy consumption in the EU transport sector from 2020. Current levels stand at about 4.5%, meaning there would be little room for increased production in the coming years if the legislation is approved.

The regulations also contain a pledge to end subsidies for crop-based biofuels after the current legislation expires in 2020.

The move represents an abrupt change of direction for the EU and throws into doubt its much-criticised target to source 10% of road transport fuels from renewable sources by the end of the decade.

Green campaigners have long cast doubt on the sustainability of this target, as well as the emissions savings from crop-based biofuels, consistently warning increased demand for energy crops can force up food prices and take over land that could be used for food production.

Second-generation biofuels made from crop residues, waste, algae or woody material are being developed that address these sustainability concerns. But while the market is predicted to grow in the US on the back of legislative targets brought in by the Obama administration, there are no such goals in the EU and production is expected to remain at a low level until the end of the decade.

However, the leaked draft reveals the EU is looking to increase the share of these advanced biofuels in its 10% target and may consider quadruple counting them in order to drive investment in second-generation fuels while ensuring the target is met.

This clear focus on advanced biofuels, is reflected by the speakers and topics chosen for the upcoming Biofuels International Conference in Antwerp on 21-22 November. David Weaver, CEO of TMO Renewables, has firsthand experience of working in this field.

His company has just made the first step in a future series of second generation biofuel production facilities in China. TMO has secured biomass feedstock supply for a planned bioethanol production plant in north-east China, a country which already limits the production of crop-based biofuels. Weaver will look at how the price of second generation biofuels can be brought down, and also at other international opportunities.

Michele Rubino, COO, Beta Renewables will also be discussing second generation ethanol production, looking at the world's first commercial scale cellulosic ethanol plant. The company is building a 60,000 tonne plant in Crescentino, Italy, and expects the ethanol produced to be fully sold out as soon as it's ready.

Other conference highlights include Ignaas Caryn, Director of Innovation and Corporate Venturing and Biofuels Strategy at KLM. The Dutch airline has just operated the longest biofuel flight, partly flying on biofuels made from used cooking oil.

Using the same second generation feedstock Adam Baisley, Head of Business Development, Agri Energy will be speaking about its achievement this year to open the UK's largest dedicated used cooking oil (UCO) biodiesel plant.

He will speak about how some second generation feedstocks count double towards meeting sustainability targets, and the challenges involved with securing a reliable, sustainable supply chain.

Agent orange in the food we eat -and this is a breakthrough?

In early July, on the sleepy Friday after Independence Day, the USDA quietly signaled its intention to green-light a new genetically engineered soybean seed from Dow AgroSciences. The product is designed to produce soy plants that withstand 2,4-D, a highly toxic herbicide (and, famously, the less toxic component in the notorious Vietnam War-era defoliant Agent Orange).
